1284 Communications MD George Oliver has been shortlisted Company Leader of the Year at TheBusinessDesk.com Leadership Awards 2025.

George was nominated in the category of Company Leader (up to 50 employees) and will now go forward for judging ahead of the awards night in Nottingham in March.

As well as being the founder and managing director of 1284 Communications, George is an award-winning Chartered PR Practitioner.

He has a first-class MSc in Strategic Leadership from Loughborough University Business School, is a CMI Chartered Manager, and is a non-executive director at East Midlands Chamber.

George also chairs Charity Link - a 148-year-old Leicester-based poverty alleviation charity with a £2m turnover - and is Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Leicester University.

George - who became Editor of the Leicester Mercury in 2016 at the age of 36 - also co-founded a Loughborough-based business support social enterprise alongside Scott Charlish and Ian Borley.

He said: 'I started 1284 Communications at the age of 40, so my route to having my own company was varied!

'After university, I worked in the public sector then spent 15 years in journalism, so I've seen all sorts of leaders over the years.

'I've learned from them all along the way and it's really pleasing to be shortlisted for this award now in the company of some brilliant East Midlands leaders.'

The finalists in the category of Company Leader (up to 50 employees) are:

  • Martin Birch (Belmayne Independent Chartered Financial Planners)
  • Holly Daulby (Honest Communications)
  • George Oliver (1284 Communications)
  • Chloe Sproston (Blueprint Interiors)
  • Amad Tababa (Autify Digital)
